People who have this type of sleep disorder experience loud, habitual snoring. It is more common in men who are over 40 years old and overweight.
People who have narcolepsy find that they have a very hard time staying awake when they relax or even when they are trying to complete daily tasks. Many people say they have an uncontrollable and excessive urge to sleep during the day. They usually wake up feeling rested, but feel very sleepy throughout the day.
Narcolepsy can have a great impact on daily activities. People could fall asleep in the middle of a conversation, while eating or driving. Those episodes can be as short as a few seconds. Some people are able to continue their activity while asleep, but without any awareness of what they’re doing.
This type of sleep disorder impacts men and women equally. It often goes undiagnosed, but is estimated to affect around 200,000 Americans.
